FAQ
General reptile keeping, species-specific topics and the wonderfully odd questions we get asked at shows and on social media.
General
Who we are, how we work and what you can expect from JZ-Reptiles.
Who is JZ-Reptiles?
JZ-Reptiles is an Austrian reptile keeping and breeding project. We focus on healthy, well-documented animals, traceable origins and honest advice before and after an animal leaves us.
What animals do you breed?
Our main focus is Burmese pythons, alongside a selected range of other reptile species. You can see our current breeding animals and anything available on the “Breeding animals” and “Available animals” pages.
Can I ask questions before buying?
Absolutely. We want the animal, the setup and the future keeper to be a good match. You are welcome to ask about husbandry, adult size, feeding, equipment or preparation through the contact form or WhatsApp.
Available animals & reservations
Availability, reservations, deposits and how a binding reservation works.
When is an animal considered available?
We only list an animal as available once it is feeding reliably, looks healthy and we feel it is ready to move to a new home.
Can I reserve an animal?
Yes, reservations are possible by arrangement. A deposit is required for every binding reservation. If the animal is not collected within the agreed reservation period, or the buyer does not go ahead with the reservation, the deposit is retained to cover the reservation and the work involved.
Can I reserve an animal for a show?
Yes. By arrangement, an animal can be reserved and brought to a show for handover. A deposit is required because the animal is then held specifically for you, planned into the transport and kept off the market until the show.
What does “Reserved” mean?
Reserved means there is serious interest and a reservation has been agreed or is in progress. If that reservation falls through, the animal may become available again.
What does “Holdback” mean?
Holdback means we are keeping the animal ourselves for the time being – for example because of its genetics, development, pattern or future breeding potential.
Husbandry & preparation
Enclosure setup, equipment and the basics you should have ready before an animal moves in.
Do you advise on husbandry before an animal leaves?
Yes. We only let an animal go when the basic setup is ready or can realistically be made ready. That includes the enclosure, temperatures, humidity, feeding, safety and suitable equipment.
Does the enclosure need to be ready before collection?
Ideally, yes. Especially with larger or more demanding species, the enclosure should already be running steadily before the animal moves in so temperatures and humidity can be checked properly.
Do you sell to beginners?
That depends on the species. Some animals are much more beginner-friendly than others, while some need a lot of experience, space and safety awareness. If we think a species is not a good fit, we will say so.
Collection & shows
Personal collection, show handovers, transport and planning your pickup.
Where can I collect an animal?
Personal collection can be arranged. Certain animals can also be brought to reptile shows or expos if the handover has been agreed in advance.
Do you ship animals?
Shipping is only considered by prior arrangement and only when the temperature, travel time, species and legal requirements make it appropriate. The animal’s welfare always comes first.
Origin & documentation
Captive breeding, origin records, paperwork, sexing and identification.
Will I receive proof of origin?
Yes. The relevant origin or transfer information is provided with the animal. Depending on the species, additional paperwork or documentation may also be required.
Are your animals captive-bred?
For our own offspring, the origin is clearly documented. If an animal came from another source, we state that origin as clearly as possible wherever it is known and traceable.
Is the sex guaranteed?
If a sex is listed, it has been determined to the best of our knowledge. With young animals, reliability can still depend on species and age, and we are open about any uncertainty.
Contact & privacy
How to reach us, WhatsApp, the contact form and what happens to your data.
How can I contact you?
You can reach us through the contact form, by email at info@jz-reptiles.at or via WhatsApp.
Why is there a security question on the contact form?
It helps protect the form from automated spam. The check runs locally on our website and does not use an external CAPTCHA service.
What happens to my data when I send an enquiry?
We use your details only to deal with your enquiry. You can find the full information in our privacy policy.
Curious questions
The questions we hear all the time at shows – plus a few reptile myths worth clearing up.
Are snakes slimy?
No. Snakes are not slimy at all. Their skin is dry and, depending on the species, can feel smooth, firm or slightly textured. After a bath or misting they may be wet, of course – but never slimy.
Are snakes cold?
Snakes are ectothermic, so their body temperature depends on their surroundings. If a snake has just been sitting in a warm spot, it can feel surprisingly warm.
Why do snakes flick their tongues?
They use the tongue to collect scent particles from the air and analyse them with the Jacobson’s organ. Put simply, it is one of the main ways a snake “smells” its surroundings.
Can a snake blink?
No. Snakes do not have movable eyelids. Their eyes are covered by a transparent scale that is shed along with the rest of the skin.
Do snakes like being stroked?
Snakes do not seek affection in the same way mammals do. Some tolerate calm handling very well, while others would rather be left alone. The important thing is to respect the individual animal’s behaviour.
Can you cuddle a reptile?
Reptiles are animals to observe and care for, not cuddly pets. Some individuals tolerate calm handling, but it should always be controlled, brief and as stress-free as possible.
Are all reptiles dangerous?
No. Problems usually come from unsuitable husbandry, poor handling or a lack of experience. Every species has its own needs, which is exactly why good research before buying matters.
Species & care
Choose a species to jump straight to the most common questions. The answers use the same species information as our animal pages, so everything stays consistent across the site.
African spurred tortoise (Centrochelys sulcata)
Where does the African spurred tortoise come from?
The natural range lies in a broad Sahel belt south of the Sahara, including areas of Mali, Niger, Chad, Sudan and Ethiopia.
What is important when keeping an African spurred tortoise?
Long-term husbandry requires large, sunny and escape-proof areas, deep dry digging opportunities, strong UV and heat zones, and a heated winter area where the climate requires it. The diet is fibre-rich and based on grasses and herbs.
How much space does an African spurred tortoise need?
The species becomes very large and requires extensive, sunny and escape-proof areas in the long term. Space should be planned for adult size even when the animal is still young.
Why are digging opportunities important?
African spurred tortoises use sheltered areas and dig in their natural habitat. Deep, suitable and dry digging opportunities are therefore an important part of enclosure structure.
What role do UV and heat play?
Strong UV and heat zones are central to husbandry, while the animal must still be able to choose between different activity areas.
What does an African spurred tortoise eat?
The diet is fibre-rich and adapted to grasses and herbs. Persistently unsuitable, overly energy-dense feeding does not match the species’ natural diet.
What needs to be considered in winter?
In regions with unsuitable outdoor winter conditions, a sufficiently large, heated and well-lit winter area is required for long-term husbandry.

Axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum)
Where does the Axolotl come from?
The wild form is native to the lake and canal system around Xochimilco in the Valley of Mexico.
What is important when keeping an Axolotl?
Axolotls are aquatic amphibians that require clean, cool and stable water conditions, sufficient floor space, sheltered areas and filtration with manageable current. Water quality and temperature stability are central to husbandry.
What water conditions are important for axolotls?
Clean, cool and stable water is one of the most important foundations. Water quality and temperature should be checked regularly and major fluctuations avoided.
Do axolotls need strong water flow?
Filtration should maintain good water quality without exposing the animals to constant strong current. Flow should therefore suit the tank size and the animals’ behaviour.
How should an axolotl aquarium be furnished?
Sufficient floor space, sheltered retreats and furnishings without avoidable injury risks are important. Routine maintenance should remain practical.
Why is water temperature especially important for axolotls?
Axolotls are adapted to relatively cool water. Persistently unsuitable warming should therefore be avoided and temperature stability considered during planning.
What should be considered when feeding axolotls?
Food type, amount and interval should be adapted to the individual animal’s size, age and body condition. Uneaten food should not be allowed to unnecessarily reduce water quality.

Asian water monitor (Varanus salvator)
Where does the Asian water monitor come from?
The species complex ranges from parts of India and Sri Lanka across mainland Southeast Asia to Malaysia and numerous Indonesian islands.
What is important when keeping an Asian water monitor?
Asian water monitors require extensive usable space, robust climbing and digging structures, intensive lighting with suitable UV provision, an effective basking area and a large, easy-to-clean water section. Enrichment and controlled training are particularly useful for this active, intelligent species.
How much space does an Asian water monitor need?
Asian water monitors are large and active animals. Their enclosure requires extensive usable space with robust climbing, walking and digging structures as well as a large water area.
Why is a large water area important for an Asian water monitor?
The species is semiaquatic. A genuinely usable and easy-to-clean water area is therefore an important part of a long-term enclosure.
What lighting does an Asian water monitor need?
The enclosure needs intensive lighting, suitable UV provision and an effective basking area, while also providing places where the animal can retreat.
Does an Asian water monitor need enrichment?
Yes. Asian water monitors are active and intelligent. Structural complexity, foraging opportunities and controlled training can provide useful enrichment and support predictable care routines.
What is especially important when furnishing the enclosure?
Climbing, digging and resting structures must be robust, load-bearing and appropriate for the animal’s size. Cleaning and maintenance should remain practical despite the complex setup.

Cranwell's horned frog (Ceratophrys cranwelli)
Where does the Cranwell's horned frog come from?
The species originates from seasonal habitats in the Gran Chaco region of South America.
What is important when keeping a Cranwell's horned frog?
Cranwell’s horned frogs need a ground-oriented enclosure with suitable burrowable substrate, secure retreats, a controlled moisture gradient and clean water. The substrate should support natural burying behaviour without remaining waterlogged.
Why does a Cranwell’s horned frog need burrowable substrate?
Horned frogs spend much of their time on or within the substrate. Suitable burrowable substrate supports this natural behaviour.
How humid should the enclosure be?
A controlled moisture gradient is preferable to permanently waterlogged conditions. The substrate should provide suitable moisture without remaining swampy.
Does a horned frog need hides?
Sheltered retreats complement the burrowable substrate and provide additional choices for the animal.
What is important about the water supply?
Clean water should be safely accessible and renewed regularly. The container and surrounding area should be easy to clean.
What should be considered when feeding a horned frog?
Prey size and feeding amount should suit the frog’s size and body condition. Varied, controlled feeding is preferable to a constant excess of food.

Burmese python (Python bivittatus)
Where does the Burmese python come from?
The natural range extends from parts of southern China through Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam to Malaysia and parts of Indonesia.
What is important when keeping a Burmese python?
Burmese pythons require a very spacious, escape-proof and robust enclosure with a clear thermal gradient, dry and more humid retreats, and constant access to clean water. Their adult size and strength also require a reliable safety and handling concept.
How large and powerful can a Burmese python become?
The Burmese python is a very large and powerful constrictor. The enclosure, furnishings, doors and locks should therefore be planned from the outset for the animal’s adult size, weight and strength.
How should a Burmese python enclosure be set up?
The enclosure should provide generous usable space, robust resting and hiding areas, a clear thermal gradient, drier and more humid retreats, and constant access to clean water. It must also be secure and escape-proof.
What temperature and humidity does a Burmese python need?
A useful climate gradient is more important than one uniform value throughout the enclosure. Warm and cooler areas together with appropriately drier and more humid retreats allow the animal to choose suitable conditions.
What does a Burmese python eat?
As a constrictor, the species feeds on suitable prey animals. Prey size and feeding intervals should be adapted to the individual animal’s age, size, body condition and activity.
What is especially important when keeping and breeding large Burmese pythons?
Long-term space planning, secure working routines and careful handling are essential in addition to appropriate husbandry. Breeding animals also benefit from consistent documentation and individual assessment.

Emerald tree boa (Corallus caninus)
Where does the Emerald tree boa come from?
The species inhabits Amazonian and Guianan rainforest regions of northern South America.
What is important when keeping an Emerald tree boa?
Emerald tree boas need a quiet, vertically structured enclosure with securely sized horizontal perches, good air movement and an appropriate day-night and humidity cycle. Persistent waterlogging and stagnant air should be avoided.
How should an emerald tree boa enclosure be structured?
As an arboreal species it needs a quiet, vertically structured enclosure with securely sized horizontal perches and sheltered resting areas.
Why are horizontal perches so important?
Stable horizontal perches provide key resting and activity sites. Different positions also allow the animal to use different climate zones.
What role do airflow and humidity play?
An appropriate humidity cycle and good air movement belong together. Persistent waterlogging and stagnant, stale air should be avoided.
Is vertical structure useful for this species?
Yes. Its arboreal lifestyle should be reflected in usable height and several secure climbing and resting routes.
What is especially important when furnishing the enclosure?
Perches and other load-bearing elements must be securely fixed and appropriately sized. The layout should provide calm resting places while still allowing routine care and inspection.
Where can I see JZ-Reptiles’ breeding animals of this species?
You can find our breeding animals and species information on the breeding animals page for Emerald tree boa (Corallus caninus). See our breeding animals.

Where does the Indian python come from?
The species occurs mainly in India, Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka and in adjoining regions of the Indian subcontinent.
What is important when keeping an Indian python?
Indian pythons need extensive space, load-bearing resting areas, secure retreats, usable water and clearly separated thermal zones. The enclosure and its security must be designed for the animal’s adult weight, strength and size.
How should an enclosure for an Indian python be planned?
It should provide extensive usable space, load-bearing resting areas, secure retreats, usable water and clearly separated thermal zones. Construction and security must be designed for the animal’s adult weight, strength and size.
Why are robust resting areas important for Indian pythons?
Large pythons can become very heavy. Resting structures and furnishings therefore need to be securely fixed, load-bearing and positioned so the animal can use them comfortably.
Does an Indian python need different climate zones?
Yes. Different temperature zones and suitable retreats allow the animal to select conditions that match its current needs.
What role does water play in Indian python husbandry?
Clean, usable water is part of the basic setup. It should be positioned so that cleaning and regular water changes can be carried out reliably.
What should be considered with adult Indian pythons?
Adult size, strength and long-term space requirements need to be considered before acquisition. Secure locks and well-planned working routines are especially important with large animals.

Emperor scorpion (Pandinus imperator)
Where does the Emperor scorpion come from?
The emperor scorpion originates from humid tropical regions of West Africa, where it uses sheltered ground habitats and burrows.
What is important when keeping an Emperor scorpion?
Emperor scorpions need a secure terrestrial enclosure with deep, stable and burrowable substrate, sheltered hides, warm conditions and a suitable moisture gradient. Good ventilation should be maintained without allowing the substrate to dry out completely.
How deep should the substrate be for an emperor scorpion?
Emperor scorpions dig and use sheltered ground areas. A sufficiently deep, stable and permanently burrowable substrate zone should therefore be available.
What humidity does an emperor scorpion need?
The species originates from humid tropical habitats. A suitable moisture gradient in the substrate combined with functional ventilation is useful; persistently bone-dry or waterlogged substrate should be avoided.
Does an emperor scorpion need hides?
Yes. Several secure retreats and burrowable areas give the animal choices and reduce unnecessary disturbance.
What does an emperor scorpion eat?
Emperor scorpions are predators that feed on suitable prey animals. Prey size and feeding intervals should be adapted to age, size and body condition.
What is important when breeding emperor scorpions?
Stable husbandry conditions, suitable retreats and burrowing opportunities, and close observation are important. Pair or group housing should only be attempted with sufficient structure and monitoring.

Kenyan sand boa (Gongylophis colubrinus (syn. Eryx colubrinus))
Where does the Kenyan sand boa come from?
Records extend from Egypt and the Nile region through Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea and Somalia to Kenya and Tanzania, with some populations geographically separated.
What is important when keeping a Kenyan sand boa?
The enclosure needs sufficiently deep, burrowable and stable substrate, a predominantly dry setup, protected hides and a thermal gradient. A small suitable humid area can support shedding without keeping the entire substrate permanently wet.
Why does a Kenyan sand boa need burrowable substrate?
The species is predominantly fossorial. Sufficiently deep, burrowable and stable substrate allows it to express this natural behaviour in the enclosure.
Should a Kenyan sand boa enclosure be dry or humid?
The setup is predominantly dry. A small suitable humid area can help with shedding without keeping the entire substrate permanently wet.
Does a Kenyan sand boa still need hides with deep substrate?
Yes. In addition to burrowing, protected hides provide different secure retreat options.
What climate structure is useful?
A thermal gradient with different activity areas allows the animal to choose its preferred conditions.
What should be avoided in the substrate?
Persistently wet, unstable or otherwise unsuitable substrate does not match the species’ predominantly dry, burrowing lifestyle.

New Caledonian giant gecko (Rhacodactylus leachianus)
Where does the New Caledonian giant gecko come from?
The species is endemic to New Caledonia, where different island and mainland populations occur in forest habitats.
What is important when keeping a New Caledonian giant gecko?
New Caledonian giant geckos need a vertically structured enclosure with robust climbing surfaces, sheltered retreats, good ventilation and an appropriate humidity cycle. Furnishings must be securely fixed for these heavy arboreal geckos.
How should a New Caledonian giant gecko enclosure be structured?
This arboreal species needs substantial usable height, robust climbing surfaces, sheltered retreats and good spatial structure.
Why must branches and climbing surfaces be especially robust?
Giant geckos are powerful and comparatively heavy arboreal geckos. Load-bearing elements therefore need to be securely fixed and appropriately sized.
What role do humidity and ventilation play?
An appropriate humidity cycle should be combined with good air movement. Persistently wet or poorly ventilated conditions should be avoided.
Does a giant gecko need retreats?
Yes. Several sheltered retreat options give the animal choices and contribute to a well-structured enclosure.
Why can lineage be important in breeding?
For Rhacodactylus leachianus, origin and lineage can be relevant to documentation and breeding plans. Traceable records help keep breeding decisions transparent.

Northern African rock python (Python sebae)
Where does the Northern African rock python come from?
The range covers large parts of West, Central and East Africa south of the Sahara.
What is important when keeping a Northern African rock python?
This species requires an especially robust, securely locked enclosure with structured ground and resting areas, water, and a reliable safety and handling concept. Retreats and climate zones should allow the animal to move between conditions without being forced.
What kind of enclosure does a Northern African rock python require?
The enclosure must be especially robust and secure and should provide structured ground, resting and retreat areas as well as water. Its dimensions must match the animal’s long-term size and strength.
Why is a safety concept important for Northern African rock pythons?
With a very large and powerful python, locks, working routines and handling need to be planned in advance. Safety is an integral part of husbandry rather than an afterthought.
What climate zones should the enclosure provide?
Retreat and activity areas should offer different conditions so the animal can choose between warmer, cooler and suitably sheltered zones.
Does a Northern African rock python need water in the enclosure?
Clean, easily accessible water is part of appropriate husbandry. Its size and placement should suit both the enclosure and the animal and allow reliable cleaning.
Is a Northern African rock python suitable for a small standard terrarium?
No. Its adult size, strength and space requirements call for a correspondingly large, robust and securely planned enclosure in the long term.

Panther chameleon (Furcifer pardalis)
Where does the Panther chameleon come from?
Panther chameleons originate from Madagascar and are especially widespread in the north and along the eastern and north-western coastal regions.
What is important when keeping a Panther chameleon?
They are kept individually in tall, well-ventilated and densely planted enclosures. Suitable UV and heat zones, many visual barriers and climbing routes, reliable drinking water and an appropriate daily climate cycle are essential.
How should a panther chameleon enclosure be set up?
A tall, very well-ventilated and densely planted enclosure with many climbing routes, visual barriers and different activity zones is appropriate.
Why are UV light and a basking area important?
Suitable UV provision and heat zones are central husbandry factors, while the animal must also be able to reach cooler and sheltered areas.
How does a panther chameleon get drinking water?
A reliable drinking-water supply is important and should suit the animal’s natural drinking behaviour. Water and humidity management need to be combined with good ventilation.
Are panther chameleons kept together?
They are generally kept individually. Visual barriers and a calm, structured environment help reduce unnecessary stress.
What does locality mean in panther chameleons?
Panther chameleons occur in geographically influenced localities with characteristic colour and pattern tendencies. Traceable origin documentation is particularly valuable in breeding.

Río Fuerte Beaded Lizard (Heloderma exasperatum)
Where does the Río Fuerte Beaded Lizard come from?
The Río Fuerte Beaded Lizard is native to north-western Mexico, especially southern Sonora and south-western Chihuahua around the Río Fuerte drainage.
What is important when keeping a Río Fuerte Beaded Lizard?
This venomous species requires specialist, legally compliant care in a highly secure terrestrial enclosure. A useful practical range for adults is around 21–25 °C in the cooler daytime zones with a 35–40 °C basking area; night temperatures can drop to about 17–20 °C. Deep secure retreats, burrowable substrate, humid microclimates and good ventilation are essential, with stronger seasonal misting rather than a constantly wet enclosure.
What temperatures does a Río Fuerte Beaded Lizard need?
A practical adult range is around 21–25 °C in the cooler daytime zones with a basking area of about 35–40 °C. At night the temperature can fall considerably; a successfully documented enclosure used roughly 17–20 °C at night. The key is a real thermal gradient so the animal can choose its preferred temperature.
What humidity and substrate moisture are appropriate?
A single constant enclosure-wide humidity target is less useful than a moisture gradient. Burrows and secure retreats should stay noticeably more humid while good ventilation prevents waterlogging. In one documented nest chamber, relative humidity was 87–94%; that high value applies to the humid nest microclimate, not the entire enclosure.
How deep should the substrate be?
The enclosure should include genuinely deep, stable and burrowable substrate. A successful zoo enclosure used depths of roughly 10–60 cm depending on the area, and the female selected nesting zones deeper than 20 cm.
Does the species benefit from seasonal climate changes?
Yes. Seasonal changes in light, temperature and moisture are useful. One documented husbandry system used a 14–16 hour photoperiod in summer and 10–12 hours in winter. More intensive misting during wetter periods can also encourage activity.
What safety requirements apply to a Río Fuerte Beaded Lizard?
As a venomous lizard, the species requires an especially secure, escape-proof enclosure and clearly planned working procedures. Safety and any applicable legal requirements must be clarified before keeping the species.
How should a Río Fuerte Beaded Lizard enclosure be structured?
A generous ground area, deep secure retreats, burrowing zones, sturdy rock or wood structures and clearly separated temperature and moisture zones are appropriate. Furnishings must not interfere with safe inspection and routine care.
Is a Río Fuerte Beaded Lizard suitable for beginners?
Because of its venom, size, safety requirements and specialised husbandry and working procedures, it is not a typical beginner species.
Where can I see JZ-Reptiles’ breeding animals of this species?
